What's In Motion (for dad)
Over the thrill hill the station wagon glides,
you enjoyed getting a rise out of your kids
on a rural stretch. Hands off the wheel,
knee doing the steering. Stop it dad.
What’s in motion isn’t just you putting our bodies
somewhere between 40 and 50,
strapped into that old Volvo.
What’s in motion is about more than inertia
and more than any moment or mile.
Someday my children will be the grandfather, the grandmother,
that plays like you do with them, teasing
teaching, tricking their kid’s kids.
There will be stories about you.
The ones that get a smile, oh boy did he get himself
into trouble. Then we’ll turn to your gentle side,
and hope these fun and loving genes were passed on.
What’s in motion isn’t just you making life
or teaching me how to play chess
so that I one day teach my girl to play chess.
What’s in motion is more than DNA or stories
and more than any moment or mile.
Our earth spins, circles.
Our solar system separates.
Our universe expands.
Rocks collide.
Gases emit.
Life emerges.
Our evolution begins.
From way back when, to you reading these words,
we’re in motion.
I’m glad we have each other.
